Roger F. Tomlinson, CM (born 17 November 1933) is an English geographer and the primary originator of modern computerized Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and has been touted as the “Father of GIS”. He is known as a visionary geographer who conceived and developed GIS for use by the Canada Land Inventory. His pioneering work, beginning in the early1960s, changed the face of geography as a discipline and he was awarded an Order of Canada, which is Canada’s highest civilian honor. Governments and scientists around the world have turned to him to better understand the environment and changing patterns of land use, and to better manage urban development and the use of natural resources.Dr. Tomlinson’s contributions include chairmanship of the International Geographical Union’s GIS Commission for 12 years, and where he pioneered the concepts of worldwide geographical data availability. He is a past president of the Canadian Association of Geographers and a recipient of its rare Award for Service to the Profession. The Association of American Geographers in the United States awarded him the James R. Anderson Medal of Honor for Applied Geography in 1995. Dr. Tomlinson is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and winner of its prestigious Murchison Award for the Development of Geographic Information Systems. In 1996 he was awarded the GIS World Lifetime Achievement Award for a lifetime of work with geographic information systems, and he was the first recipient of the ESRI Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. Dr. Tomlinson was awarded the Order of Canada in February of 2004.
Born in Cambridge, England, Dr. Tomlinson adopted Canada as his home in 1957. During the spring of 1962, while on a plane bound from Ottawa to Toronto he met Lee Pratt, then recently named head of the Canada Land Inventory (CLI). Tomlinson then was chief of the computer mapping division at a Canadian airline service. Pratt described a vast mapping project CLI was about to undertake – a multilayer land-use/ planning map of Canada’s inhabited and productive land–around 1 million square miles. Tomlinson told Pratt some of his ideas might work for CLI and Pratt eventually hired him to head the program that resulted in the first GIS.
He holds bachelor’s degrees from Nottingham University in England and Acadia University in Canada; a master’s degree from McGill University in Canada; and a Ph.D. from University College in England.
Dr. Tomlinson is the principal of Tomlinson Associates, Ltd., Consulting Geographers, which was established in 1977 in Ottawa, Ontario. He has advised clients such as the World Bank, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the U.S. departments of Commerce and Agriculture, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Bureau of the Census, the Canadian Forest Service, and numerous U.S. state and Canadian provincial and municipal government agencies.

Natalie Portman (real name Natalie Hershlag) was born on June 9, 1981 in Jerusalem, Israel. She is an Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe Award-winning Israeli-American actress. Natalie Portman , as a young child , spent her school holidays attending theatre camps where she developed her love of acting. After some experience in an off-Broadway musical, she was cast in Leon (released in North America as The Professional) at age twelve.
During the mid-1990s,Natalie Portman had small roles in films such as Heat, Everyone Says I Love You and Mars Attacks!, as well as having a major role in Beautiful Girls. She placed a priority on education and pursued tertiary education even when it conflicted with her acting career. In the late 1990s, Natalie Portman was cast as Queen Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Recent roles include Anywhere But Here, Garden State, Closer, and V for Vendetta. For Closer, Natalie Portman received a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award.
Her father, Avner Hershlag, is an Israeli medical doctor specializing in the research and treatment of human fertility and reproduction (reproductive endocrinology). Her mother, Shelley Stevens, is a Jewish American artist who now works as her agent. Natalie Portman’s father’s family are descendants of Jewish immigrants from Poland and Romania, while her mother’s family were Jewish immigrants from Austria and Russia; her paternal grandfather’s parents died in Auschwitz and her Romanian-born great-grandmother was a spy for the British during World War II.
Her parents met at a Jewish student center at Ohio State University, where her mother was selling tickets. Natalie Portman’s father returned to Israel, but the two corresponded and were married when her mother visited Israel a few years later. When Natalie Portman was three years old, her family moved from Israel to her mother’s native United States, where her father pursued his medical training. The family lived in Washington, D.C. in 1984 and then Connecticut in 1988, before finally settling down in Syosset, New York in 1990. Natalie Portman is an only child and very close to her parents, who are often seen with her at movie premieres; her mother always accompanied pre-adult Portman to movie shoot locations. Natalie Portman started taking dancing lessons at the age of four, performed in local troupes, and dreamed of dancing on Broadway. At the age of ten Portman was discovered in a pizza parlor by an agent for Revlon, who offered her an opportunity to model. She asked to be introduced to acting talent scouts, and took “Portman”, her grandmother’s maiden name, as her professional stage surname.
Starting at age 13, Natalie Portman spent her school holidays attending upscale theatre camps Stagedoor Manor and Usdan Camp, where she forged her love for acting, playing roles in the camp productions such as the title character in Anne of Green Gables, Dream Laurey in Oklahoma! and Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In 1993 Natalie Portman was handed her first professional role as an understudy for the off-Broadway musical Ruthless!. Her inaugural experience in professional theatre led her to audition for Luc Besson’s 1994 film Leon (aka The Professional). She was intially turned down for the role due to her youth, but further auditioning won her the part. Soon after Portman was given the part, she took Portman as her stage name in the interest of privacy. In the film, Portman plays an orphaned girl who befriends a much older assassin. Leon opened on November 18, 1994 and marked her feature film debut at age thirteen. That same year appeared in the short film Developing which aired on television.

Kelly Brook ( full name Kelly Ann Parsons) was born on November 23, 1979. She is an English model, television presenter, and movie & TV actress. After leaving school in Rochester, Kelly Brook studied at the Italia Conti stage school in London for three years before becoming a professional model. Kelly Brook’s early work was in a range of advertising campaigns, including for the new “Bravissimo” company that specializes in bras and lingerie for full-figured women, and for Foster’s beer. Kelly Brook is 5’8″ tall, and her figure is very well suited for Bravissimo. Her figure caught the eye of the editorial team of the Daily Star who began featuring her as a page 3 girl. Kelly Brook’s picture soon began appearing in other lad mags such as FHM (and repe atedly landing in its list of the “100 Sexiest Women of the Year”) and Loaded.
Kelly Brook’s talent can be traced back to when she attended the prestigious Italia Conte stage school, where Naomi Campbell and Louise Nurding also studied. Kelly Brook was finally making a larger salary, as compared to her waitressing job at a tea shop. More modeling jobs came Kelly Brook’s way, such as print campaigns for Renault Megane, Walkers, Piz Buin, and the Triumph Flaunt underwear and bra line. The latter featured Kelly Brook on a billboard in London, said to be the largest billboard in the world – all the more to see Kelly.
Although Kelly Brook was appearing in ads all over the UK, she hit the big time when she won the position of Big Breakfast presenter on Britain’s Channel 4. It was Kelly Brook’s dream come true, since she was more interested in being a presenter than acting or singing. Rumor has it that Kelly Brook quit Big Breakfast after the tabloids published that the show was going to fire her for being ”too dumb.” Well, she beat them to it by resigning. After Big Breakfast, Kelly Brook was busy hosting MTV’s Select. It was the perfect move for her, as she wanted to be involved with presenting hip music to young fans, because of her interest in dance. Kelly Brook topped the 2005 FHM list, which was said to have polled 15 million people. Kelly Brook is currently engaged to actor Billy Zane, having previously dated actor Jason Statham. Her big break into mainstream presenting came in January 1999 when she was chosen to replace Denise van Outen as the female half of The Big Breakfast presenting team, alongside Johnny Vaughan. Kelly Brook remained for half a year and then parted company with the show in July 1999 under unclear circumstances. Initial reports suggested that she had resigned, but later it was suggested that in fact Brook had been sacked, and only learned about it while vacationing. In either case, most television reviewers said that Kelly Brook was too inexperienced for the role, and cited a leaked memo from the production staff to the show’s writers, recommending that they avoid giving her “difficult words” in her scripts. Vaughan, in an interview with Heat, condemned these attacks as inaccurate and vindictive, especially towards a young presenter. Kelly Brook appeared presenting again on national TV in 2005 in “Celebrity Love Island”, with Irish comedian Patrick Kielty, and her hosting abilities were slated once again by TV critics.
Kelly Brook also stars in School for Seduction, a 2004 film. Kelly Brook recently starred in a Miss Marple drama on ITV. Her forthcoming film Three, in which she co-starred with fiance Zane, caused some minor controversy when Brook and Zane requested her nude scenes be excised from the final cut, which the producers refused to do. Kelly Brook recently confessed that she was a naughty babysitter during her younger years. One of her clients owned a huge collection of porn films and she just couldn’t help taking advantage of it. “When I was younger, I used to babysit for a couple who had a huge collection of naughty videos,” she told Loaded magazine.” My friends would all come round and we’d sit and watch them.”
